I talked to some students who went to grad school at CMU and most of them recommend living in Oakland, so that's what I'm leaning towards right now. The bus routes seem pretty adequate.
Coming from the SF Bay Area, Pittsburgh real estate is heavenly! There's a 1B/1Ba listing I just emailed for $600/month -- I'd expect something similar to be $2k in SF.
Something else I found interesting: although rent is cheap, Airbnb's near CMU are not proportionally priced. I.e., most places around CMU are ~$70/night on Airbnb.
